Rug Cleaning

Here at The Carpet Doctor, we provide a total solution for the cleaning of all rug types. We are specialists in the cleaning and restoration of traditional Persian, Oriental and Tibetan designs right through to contemporary rugs such as Flokati, Shagpile and Modern Area Rugs. Peter Rowan, the owner is a Master Rug Cleaner and has been trained by Paul Pearce, the country's leading expert and himself the President of the NCCA and Vice-President of the IICRC.

Sadly, rug cleaning is a largely misunderstood process as many people believe (including, surprisingly, many carpet cleaners) that rugs are nothing more than ordinary carpet and should be cleaned in exactly the same way. Incorrect. Rugs are constructed quite differently from wall-to-wall carpet and need to be cleaned via a very different route.

The 6 step process

All rugs are cleaned off-site in our rug cleaning studio allowing the above processes to be followed.

1 Dry soil removal

The most important process is to remove as much dry soil as possible using a two step air dusting and mechanical beating system.

2 Colour stabilising

The rug dyes are stabilised in an acidic bath

3 Full immersion wash

The rug must then be fully immersed in cold water.

4 Mild detergent cleaning

cleaning is carried out with a safe, mild detergent using soft brushes.

5 Fringe detailing

The fringes are inspected and if necessary re-cleaned.

6 Hanging & Drying

The finished rugs are hung to dry in a temperature controlled room
